Backcountry Tarpon Gear & Flies
This is a collection of our favorite backcountry tarpon gear from rods and reels to leaders, fly lines and flies.
For baby tarpon you’ll need a 7 or 8 weight rod with a floating line. For large tarpon you’ll need a 10, 11 or 12 weight rod with either an intermediate sinking line or sink tip line.
Leaders can be the same, 16lb or 20lb. But for tippet you’ll need 60 or 80lb fluorocarbon for big tarpon, and 25 or 30lb fluorocarbon for baby tarpon. If you’re using a topwater fly like Giacobba’s Gurgler, use mono (nylon) leader and tippet.
Flies are the same for all size fish except the 3/0 EP Peanut Butter and Tarpon Snake which are specific for large tarpon.
