Big fish, small budget
The Orvis Encounter Outfit is what Orvis describes as “affordable awesomeness”. We agree. This fully rigged outfit promises great value for its performance. As an outfit to dip your toes into fly fishing, or as a truck rod (a rod that gets left in the truck for whenever a fishing opportunity arises), the Encounter gets the job done.

I have a young college bound freshman in Bolder Colorado. He loves fishing and wants to learn fly fishing. What length pac rod would you recommend? Would prefer a combo outfit ready to go.

      Hi Dennis,
The rod is rolled graphite (hollow) and the reel is a composite material (multiple materials most likely plastics)

It’s a polymer reel, nowhere near as durable as aluminum reels, the better you take care of it the longer it will last you, it should be rinsed after every use in saltwater.

Yes an 8 weight is a good all around inshore saltwater outfit, the Encounter outfit will get the job done.

The 5 weight is for trout. The 6 weight is for bass and trout. The 8 weight is for bass and saltwater (snook, bonefish, baby tarpon, redfish, most inshore fish with the exception of big tarpon).
