The originals were built from 6061-T6 aluminum with stainless steel jaws — tough, corrosion-resistant, and nearly indestructible. The anodized finish held up well over time, and you’d be hard-pressed to find one that didn’t still work after years of use.
2025 Abel Pliers:
The new pliers stick with the proven aluminum body but now feature tungsten-carbide jaws, offering a significant boost in cutting power and longevity. These jaws are replaceable, too — a nod to long-term maintenance and sustainability. Abel also tightened machining tolerances, giving the new version a smoother, more precise feel in hand.
Ergonomics & Design
Old Abel Pliers:
A bit unapologetically rugged, the original design was all about function. The grip worked, but wasn’t exactly contoured or refined.
2025 Abel Pliers:
This is where the new version shines. Abel retooled the handle design with deeper finger grooves and a slightly thinner profile, making them feel more balanced and less fatiguing over a full day on the water. They also added textures on the foregrip — subtle but effective, especially with wet hands or gloves.
Cutters
Old Abel Pliers:
The original line cutters did the job, but braid could be hit or miss depending on wear.
2025 Abel Pliers:
The new tungsten-carbide side cutters slice through braid, fluoro, and mono like butter — even thick leader material. And they’re not just sharper; they’re more precisely seated, offering cleaner cuts with less pressure.
