Backcountry Snook Gear & Flies
This is a collection of our favorite backcountry snook gear from rods and reels to leaders, fly lines and flies.
Outfit wise go with an 8 or 9 weight. If you’re deciding between the two, the 8 will give you a better presentation to snook up in skinny water, the 9 weight will give you better pulling power for snook tucked under mangroves. Either will work as great all-around backcountry snook outfits. Pair with a floating line.
Leaders should be 9′, 16 or 20lb. A fluorocarbon bite tippet of 30lb is a great start. You can go up to 40lb if you’re fishing for large snook around mangrove roots. If you’re using a topwater fly like Giacobba’s Gurgler, use a mono bite tippet.
In the backcountry we prefer either black or chartreuse flies that are seen well in tanic water. More natural patterns are also important to have if snook are keyed in on a food source.
